Chemistry
at university is an exciting extension of the subject at A and AS levels.
It is a stimulating subject for academic study, and really comes into
its own as a professional discipline when its concepts are applied to
industrial and research situations. |
| Chemistry
is essential to the modern society we live in. The chemicals,
from which all manner of consumer products are manufactured, are
produced in processes developed from the fundamental principles
of chemistry.
Chemists responsible
for commercial process development must have a sound understanding
of the underlying concepts, and must be able to communicate their
findings to other experts; the chemical engineers, business managers
and safety analysts involved in process scale-up. Some knowledge
of process design, and economic and business principles is therefore
essential.
Chemists
provide a key to the process development of consumer products,
industrial materials, medicines and foodstuffs. A good research
or process chemist needs a sound understanding of physio-chemical
principles, strong communication and teamwork skills, an understanding
of environmental concerns, and a grasp of the fundamental principles
of economics and management to keep pace with the ever-changing
demands of society. |
